Healthy?

gezond1A few weeks ago Marathonman finished his 365th marathon in a row. Mission accomplished. Logic question: how is Marathonman now? The answer is short: very good. He rests and enjoys. The past and the future. And he reads with a lot of satisfaction the medical reports of his blood analysis and other examinations he underwent during and after his marathons. Conclusion: yes there was some muscle damage (higher CK- and AST-values in the blood). But they were never alarming, says sports physician Chris Goossens, who followed Marathonman the whole year. With only a few exceptions: the days before his injury (january 2010) and the days after Marathonman ran faster than 10km/h in the citymarathons he joined.

You find much more about this in his book Marathonman.

PS For your information. Stefaan deliberately ran his marathons at a slow pace. In his case, that means a slow heart rate (100-110). However, be careful not to compare. A heartbeat is a very individual thing, and Stefaan’s heart rate is already naturally slow. For him to be able to keep his heart rate slow even when he is running for hours is the result of many years of practice. To know in which zones you should be running to build up your condition responsibly, it would be better for you to take a test. More info can be found in the book 'Gezond van Start met MarathonMan' (translates as “a healthy start with MarathonMan”).
