Make it difficult and everything becomes easy
A lecture by MarathonMan Stefaan Engels
The 5th February 2011, MarathonMan crossed the finish for his 365th marathon on a row. Project terminated, mission accomplished. And MarathonMan is doing fine. You can read it in the results of the medical reports on blood analyses and other check-ups, which he underwent during and after his marathon year. As long as MarathonMan ran at 10km/h, he could handle the effort relatively well. Now he has one big message for all those that want to run on a healthy way and enjoy it: slow down.
But it didn't take a long time before MarathonMan figured out that running 365 marathons was more about a mental question. So he looked for extreme challenges: a quicker city marathon or running in extreme heat. And then, he had deeper insights: "I started my project to hold a mirror up to people's faces in the fight against the lack of physical activity: if I can do this, everyone can run 5km. It still is my message. But little by little, my project became more important than running. It became a mirror with a larger view, the one on life itself. Don't be afraid to take actions. Get out of your comfort zone. Dare to turn things upside down."
Everybody can invite MarathonMan for a lecture or a workshop about his marathon year and his message. He uses different fees: companies (€1.250), non-profit organizations, libraries or local services (€ 500) or schools and associations (purchase of 35 books). The organizer is also responsible for transport and a beamer.
An extra possibility is a lecture with sports doctor Chris Goossens (focalized on the medical aspects of MarathonMan and on endurance sports in general) or with Prof. Dr. Ignaas Devisch, philosopher and runner (focalized on the importance of sports and physical activity in our culture, the aspect of life style, the ideal of fitness level, autonomy and other themes).
